Petrotilapia sp."chitimba" can only be found in Chitimba Bay. They are living there in the intermediate zones from rocks to sand, however they are mainly holding up above flat stones which are lying spread over the sandbottom and which are covoured with sediment and sand on a depth of more then 20 meters. In the lake the males of these species can grow to 14 cm, at this time - august 2017 - the one in my aquarium is about 14 cm, the females are about 9 á 10 cm. The man has, when he is fully grown, a nice blue-purple color on his body and very beautiful distinctive yellow fins. The females and young males have some dark wide vertical bands on their body. In 2016 I (Thimo) bought a small group of one male with three females of this species, they were very young at that time. Nowadays, august 2017, they are fully grown and the man is showing its most beautiful colors. Against other inhabitants he behaves quite tolerant, except when it`s mating-season. Then he chases all fish which tries to come in his territory. As soon as spawning is over he leaves the females alone and he doesn't really seem to care what other fish are doing. This species has been taken care of lots of younglings in this aquarium. In the lake they are mainly feeding themselves with everything they find on the rocks and plankton. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered, like spirulina pellets, mysis, artemia, cyclops and shrimp-peas mix. Food rich of algae like spirulina pellets or flakes is very important to them so this should not be missing on their menu. |
